| The Christmas 2003 highlight, was my trip away with the usual supects to 100 Mile House, a town about half a days drive north from Vancouver. ..... This small community dates back to the early pioneer days when it was called "Bridge Creek", a rest stop on the fur trade route north. It's name comes from the gold rush days when a stagecoach stop was set up to refresh travellers 100 miles from "Mile 0" at Lillooet. ..... We stayed at the Red Coach Inn which worked out really well as it was right in between two ski areas and the trail passes were included with accommodation. ..... The skiing conditions improved each day and I'm glad to say it wasn't particularly cold. Mid January (on the other hand) 100 Mile House had quite the cold snap. At times it was as low as -37C counting the wind chill. ..... Well it was nothing like that for us - sun and some overcast days - a nice mix all in all. The conclusion for us was to ski the marathon circuit. We took our time and skied the 20 odd Kilometers with lots of time to head out before dark. That said, we were prepared with head-lamps (head-torches), extra food, water and warm clothes - and the ever present cell phone (mobile) just in case we needed to call out. .....At the end of they day Dave, Todd and Paulette elected to ski out through the forest and complete the adventure, which was a good idea. The rest of us headed back to get dinner on ales chilled and hot tubs tested. I tell you, it was a tough job to volunteer for but I did -- I mean someone's gotta do it! ..... |
